Dr. Colleen McDermott was born and raised in Toronto and completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University, earning a BSc in anatomy and cell biology. She then completed a master of science degree in pathology. Following that, she attended the University of Toronto, where she attained her MD.

Dr. McDermott also completed her residency in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Toronto in 2007. She then completed a three-year fellowship in urogynaecology at Indiana University and a second master’s degree in clinical scientific research.

Dr. McDermott was on staff at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto from 2010 to 2016. She moved to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto in 2017, where she is now the division head of urogynaecology. She is a clinical researcher and an associate professor at the University of Toronto. She is the recent past president of the Canadian Society for Pelvic Medicine and recently completed her tenure as chair of the Scientific Research Committee of the American Urogynecologic Society.
