Professor. Scientist. Philanthropist. Dr. Savvas Chamberlain is all three. Yet, he holds a different title close to his heart: Canadian.

Born in Cyprus, Dr. Chamberlain immigrated to Canada in 1969 and became a proud Canadian citizen five years later. Today, he’s focused on the future of health care in Canada.

“Canada allowed me to be proud of my heritage and at the same time, to be Canadian and to prosper,” says Dr. Chamberlain. “I am proud I can give something back.”

His recent $1-million gift to Sinai Health combines his lifelong career in engineering with his passion for Canadian innovation. It will launch the digital transformation of the pathology and laboratory medicine program at Mount Sinai Hospital. For medical conditions like cancer, digital pathology means samples can be reconstructed on a computer in 3D, for faster and more precise diagnosis, and shared with leading experts across Ontario and beyond.

“I hope my gift can move the needle in the fight against cancer,” explains Dr. Chamberlain. “I also believe Canada has made significant innovations which can be adapted and incorporated for fighting cancer. Digital pathology is one way to achieve this goal.”

Thank you, Dr. Chamberlain!
