Peritoneal surface malignancies are cancers that involve the organs of the abdomen and the peritoneum. The peritoneum is a thin layer of tissue that lines your abdomen.
Our experts specialize in treating peritoneal cancers. The Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program at Mount Sinai Hospital is the first program of its kind in Ontario.
We are one of only nine hospitals in Canada to offer hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) procedures for peritoneal surface malignancies. More than 500 HIPEC procedures have been performed at Mount Sinai.
What to expect
When you are referred to our program, you will be assessed by a resident or fellow. These are physicians who are finishing their specialization. The resident or fellow will review your health history and do a brief medical exam.
You will also meet with a surgical oncologist to discuss treatment options. Your surgeon makes an assessment based on your computed tomography (CT) scan, the information your referring physician provided and the assessment completed by the resident or fellow.
Every cancer is different. Your care team will work with you to develop a care plan that is specific to your cancer. In addition to surgery, your care plan may also include systemic chemotherapy and procedures to improve your comfort.
Your surgery may be performed by any of our surgeons, regardless of who you meet during at your first appointment. This ensures you receive treatment as soon as possible.
