Pre-Admission Unit

We help prepare you for surgery before you are admitted to the hospital.

What we do

Our unit is designed to prepare surgical patients for the day of their surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Most people undergoing surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital will be scheduled for an appointment with the Pre-Admission Unit prior to the day of surgery.

What to expect

Attending your scheduled pre-admission appointment is crucial. If you miss it, your surgery may need to be cancelled or rescheduled.

During your appointment, a nurse will review your medical history with you, perform a physical exam and may collect specimens such as blood and urine samples.

We will also conduct an anesthetic review to help us plan the right type of anesthetic for you and ensure your safety during surgery.

All tests requested by your physician are important and must be completed before you are admitted to the hospital for your surgery.

The nurse will also explain what you need to do to prepare for your surgery. You might need to restrict food and drink or avoid certain activities in the days before your surgery. It is very important that you follow all instructions given to you by your care team to ensure your safety.

Your visit to the Pre-Admission Unit may also include the following:

  • X-rays
  • An electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Other tests ordered by your physician or anesthesiologist
  • Consultation with other health-care providers, such as an anesthesiologist, pharmacist or social worker
