Learners are provided with more details about our workplace policies upon registering for their placement. All policies are also available in full on the intranet portal which is can be accessed from within the Sinai Health network.

It is helpful to read the following policy summaries before starting your placement.

Accommodations

Sinai Health is committed to supporting our people with disabilities through workplace accommodations. If you require a medical or learning accommodation, please ensure your school lets us know well in advance of the placement. We will make every reasonable effort to meet your needs.

Please note that we may require the removal of a learner from placement if it becomes apparent that a safety plan is required and we have not been given the opportunity to consider this in advance.

Dress guidelines

Sinai Health is committed to respecting the cultural diversity, individual liberty and personal expression of learners while also maintaining a professional standards and ensuring compliance with all safety and quality requirements.

Please note that we do not have a scrub program, so if your placement requires scrubs, you must supply your own.

Clothing should be appropriate to the health-care environment. Shoes must have a closed heel and toe, a non-slip sole and low heel height.

In direct patient care placements, please keep nails trimmed and without nail polish, hair short or neatly tied back and avoid dangling. 

Sinai Health is a scent-controlled environment. Do not use scented products.

Identification and access cards

Mount Sinai Hospital

Learners will receive information about identification and access card requirements upon registration.

Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital

Learners are required to wear both school or academy photo identification and a Hennick Bridgepoint green student access card at all times while in the hospital. 

Learners and instructors pick up their access cards at the Security desk on their first day of placement between 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. These cards must also be returned to Security on the final day of placement. There is a fine for loss or non-return.

Immunization

All learners must submit proof of immunization and tuberculosis screening to their post-secondary institutions prior to placement.

Learner illness and injury

If you have symptoms of illness on a day that you are scheduled to be at Sinai Health, please stay at home and notify the Occupational Health department at 416-461-8252 ext. 2803.

Occupational Health will provide confidential guidance on steps to take to ensure a safe return to placement. Keep in regular contact with your supervisor so they are aware of your absence and planned return date. Do not return to placement until cleared by Occupational Health.

If you are injured or are involved in an incident at Sinai Health, inform your supervisor immediately. Your supervisor will inform Occupational Health and/or the Academic Office as appropriate. We will then work together to complete appropriate reporting and ensure a safe return to placement.

Masking

Masking policies are subject to change on a seasonal basis or in accordance with a Toronto Public Health or provincial directive.

If N95 masks are required for a learner placement, learners are responsible for arranging for mask fitting before their placement. If a student has a valid fit test for a mask that is not available at their placement hospital, a refit will be booked for the student early in their placement.

You may request a student parking pass when you collect your student security access card from the Security desk on your first day.

A secure locker for bicycles is also provided at the ambulatory care entrance. Learners may request the current access code for the bike locker from the Security desk at any time.

Safe walk

Our Security team offers a safe walk program for Sinai Health staff, employees and learners. Please call Security at your location if you need to arrange a safe walk when leaving our hospital locations.

The following information can support learners who are experiencing an urgent or crisis situation.

Learner mistreatment

We are committed to fostering a learning environment that is free of discrimination, violence and harassment. If you have experienced or witnessed mistreatment please reach out to your supervisor, preceptor or education lead for support. You can also contact your school for help.

Call 911 or seek immediate assistance from onsite security or other authorities if you are concerned about impending harm to yourself or others.

Employee Assistance Program 

Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), provided through TELUS Health, is a fully covered confidential wellness resource for our employees, learners, physicians, scientists and their families.

The program is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through TELUS Health or call 1-877-207-8833.

A range of services is available, including:

  • One-to-one virtual (phone or video) counselling within five business days
  • In-person therapy or counselling support within five to seven business days
  • A dedicated crisis page to support the impacts of ongoing world events

Personal crisis

The Ministry of Health and Ontario Health have partnered with hospitals to provide mental health services for our people including cognitive behavioural therapy and psychiatric services. You can self-refer through CAMH who will then contact you to schedule your first appointment.
