Dr. Kieran Quinn, MD, PhD | Sinai Health | University of Toronto
Dr. Nathan Stall, MD, PhD | Sinai Health | University of Toronto Learning
Objectives
- To learn about contemporary MAID provision in Canada;
- To learn about frailty, its measurement, and how it differs from normal aging;
- To discuss the intersection of frailty with MAID and provide practical guidance to clinicians involved in their care.
- To highlight forthcoming changes to MAID in Canada and their unique ethical challenges.
Abstract
Recent changes to Canadian legislation have important implications for frail adults requesting Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) and the clinicians who care for them. This is important because the provision of MAID in Canada continues to rise, including those who request it on the basis of frailty. However, several key considerations are unique to MAID assessments for frail adults that require careful attention and benefit from an evidence-informed approach.
