TORONTO (March 29, 2021) — Today, Mount Sinai Hospital opens its new state-of-the-art operating rooms and surgical services designed to deliver exceptional patient-centred care.

“The new, re-imagined space complements Mount Sinai Hospital’s world renowned specialized cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and orthopedic surgery programs,” said Dr. Gary Newton, President and CEO, Sinai Health. “For our patients, this leading edge technology and equipment will deliver improved outcomes and an enhanced care experience.”

The new facilities feature:

  • 19 state-of-the-art operating rooms
  • An operating room featuring 3D computed tomography (CT) imaging for the most complex surgeries and a robotics-assisted room for minimally invasive procedures
  • Dedicated patient bays for pre- and post- surgical care for patients on one floor
  • An enhanced family waiting lounge and amenities

“The new surgical floor was designed to support the most innovative surgeries available today,” said Dr. Jay Wunder, Surgeon-in-Chief, Sinai Health. “It will truly help us save lives and improve the experience for patients, families, and our health-care workforce.”

More than 16,000 patients undergo surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital every year. It is the second largest surgical cancer centre in the Toronto Central region, performing 3,000 cancer-related operations a year. The Granovsky-Gluskin Division of Orthopedics is a leader in complex hip and knee replacements and revision surgeries, and the Hospital is home to 10 colorectal surgeons, the largest team of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area.

This redesigned and enhanced space is part of Renew Sinai – the Hospital’s largest and most ambitious redevelopment project to date. Many of the Hospital’s most important facilities are being transformed, including the emergency department and intensive care unit which will be completed by the end of 2022. In total, more than 300,000 square feet will be redeveloped to improve care for patients with cancer, undergoing life-saving surgery and requiring emergency care.
