A newly opened operating room, exclusively dedicated to performing surgeries and other procedures on fetuses during pregnancy, was celebrated by the team of the Ontario Fetal Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The opening of the state-of-the-art operating room is another milestone for the centre, which was launched last year in partnership with SickKids. The centre cares for high-risk pregnancy patients whose baby has a condition that requires in-utero treatment.

Surgeries that the teams perform include in-utero heart surgeries that repair deformities before the baby is born, spina-bifida repair, and a condition called twin-to-twin transfusion which results in one twin getting more nutrients from the placenta than the other.

With the new operating room dedicated to in-utero procedures, access to these highly specialized procedures for women across Canada will be increased. The opening of this operating room brings the total number of operating rooms in our Labour and Delivery unit to five.
