High-Risk Obstetric Anesthesiology Clinic

We help patients with high-risk pregnancies plan for pain management during labour and delivery.

Anesthesiology and Pain Management menu

What we do

Our anesthesiologist work with other specialists to evaluate the pain management risks associated with some medical conditions. We also plan for anesthesia for Caesarean births in patients with complex medical conditions.

We see patients with complex medical needs including spinal abnormalities, congenital cardiac conditions, bleeding disorders and elevated body mass index (BMI).

What to expect

You may be invited to meet with an anesthesiologist near the start of your third trimester of pregnancy. At this appointment we will explain what pain management and anesthesia risks are associated with your medical condition and help you understand your choices for pain management during labour and/or anesthesia for Caesarean delivery

We may recommend tests to help us better understand your condition. For example, if you have a spinal abnormality, we may recommend an ultrasound.

We will then work with you and your obstetrician to decide on a care plan that is specific to your needs. The circumstances of labour and delivery can change quickly, so we will help you decide on a plan that includes multiple ways to safely manage your pain and possible caesarean delivery.

Please note that we are a teaching hospital, so you may see a medical student, resident or other medical trainee as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
