Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab)

We perform cardiac procedures and testing in our state-of-the-art cath lab.

What we do

The cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab) at Mount Sinai Hospital uses state-of-the-art technology to diagnose and treat heart disease.

Our cath lab is operated by a team of cardiologists, nurses and technicians. We perform angiograms, pacemaker implantation, specialized procedures for heart failure patients and diagnostic testing, including exercise right heart catheterization tests.

We use X-ray technology to measure the function of your heart or take diagnostic images of the blood vessels in your heart. Cardiac catheterization involves placing thin, flexible tubes, called catheters, to reach the heart and blood vessels.

The cath lab is also at the forefront of groundbreaking research on heart function and the mechanics of the heart. Some of our patients and other volunteers participate in research studies that aim to improve future treatments for cardiovascular diseases.

Most procedures in our lab are done on the same day and under local anesthetic. We also administer a sedative through an IV line so you are relaxed during the procedure.

In most cases, you will be discharged on the same day as your procedure, following a recovery period. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home when you are discharged.

What to bring

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health care coverage
  • A list of any medications you are currently using, or the medications in their original bottles or blister packs
  • A caregiver to support you before and after the procedure, and to drive you home
