Pacemaker Clinic

We provide ongoing support for patients with pacemakers or defibrillators.

What we do

The Pacemaker Clinic provides ongoing follow-up care for patients who have a pacemaker or a defibrillator implanted into their chest.

A pacemaker is a device that uses steady electrical impulses to control the heart’s rhythm.

A defibrillator is like a pacemaker, but it prevents the heart from beating too quickly by using an electric shock to reset the heart’s rhythm.

What to expect

Once you are healed from the device insertion you will come to our clinic for follow-up every six to 12 months.

Your first appointment at the clinic will be six weeks after your device is implanted.

During your appointment, your physician and nurse will use special equipment to check your pacemaker or defibrillator. Depending on your situation, you may also receive support from a representative of the pacemaker company.

We check all the elements of the pacing system, including:

  • How often your pacemaker sends an electrical impulse to your heart
  • The settings of your device
  • Battery life
  • How well the leads are working

Evaluating your pacemaker or defibrillator also provides your cardiologist with information about your heart’s rhythm between each visit.

If you have any concerns between your regular follow-up appointments, please contact the clinic by phone or email.

What to bring

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health care coverage
  • A list of current medications, including dosages and the times you take them

How to access our services

You need a referral from the physician who inserted your device or from your family physician.

If your device was inserted at Mount Sinai Hospital, you will receive your appointment date for the pacemaker clinic on the day of your surgery. Visit our referral criteria for more information.
