Early Pregnancy Clinic

We assess and support complications in early pregnancy.

What we do

Our Early Pregnancy Clinic team provides assessment and support for patients experiencing complications during the first trimester of pregnancy.

The outcome of early pregnancy complications is not always clear, so we help patients understand their options and provide emotional support.

Early pregnancy complications may include any of the following symptoms.

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Abdominal pain
  • Cramping
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Threatened or actual pregnancy loss (miscarriage)

If you are experiencing early pregnancy complications, please see your health-care provider right away or visit the Emergency Department

What to expect

If you have been referred to our clinic, call the clinic to make an appointment that will be scheduled within a week.

At your appointment, you will see a nurse who will ask about your medical history and symptoms. Our nurses work under the supervision of a gynaecologist to monitor and manage your complications.

We may recommend an ultrasound or blood work on the same day of your appointment to help us better understand your pregnancy complications and develop a care plan that is specific to your needs.

If you experience a pregnancy loss, we will help you understand your options. Treatment options for pregnancy loss include the following.

Expectant management: This option involves waiting for the natural passage of pregnancy tissue.

Medical management: This option uses Misoprostol to help the pregnancy tissue pass more quickly

Surgical management called dilatation and curettage (D&C): This is a minor surgical procedure to remove the pregnancy tissue.

After your visit to our clinic, we may recommend follow-up appointments to monitor your early pregnancy complications until they are resolved. It is important to follow up with your family physician once complications are resolved.
