Pelvic Pain (Neuropelveology) Clinic

We treat patients with a range of conditions that cause pain or dysfunction in the pelvis.

What we do

Our pelvic pain specialists diagnose and treat a range of conditions that affect pelvic nerves, leading to pain or dysfunction in the pelvic region.

These conditions include advanced endometriosis, compressed pelvic nerves and benign nervous system tumours known as schwannoma, among others.

The specific medical field that addresses these disorders is called neuropelveology. We are proud to be the only clinic in Canada that specializes in this unique field.

What to expect

Before you visit our clinic, a member of our pelvic pain team will talk to you on the phone and ask about your medical history and symptoms. We will use this information to make a possible diagnosis and arrange for any tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that can be done before your first visit.

During your appointment, a neuropelveologist will talk to you about your medical history and symptoms and perform a physical examination. The neuropelveologist may recommend tests that can be performed during your appointment, such as a cystoscopy to examine the inside of your bladder.

We will then work with you to decide on a care plan that is specific to your needs. Your treatment options may include any of the following:

  • Botox injections to manage pelvic pain
  • Physiotherapy to strengthen pelvic floor muscles
  • Nerve blocks to manage pelvic pain
  • Minimally-invasive surgery

Follow up appointments in our clinic or with another specialist may be recommended, as needed.

If surgery is recommended, we use laparoscopic technology to operate on pelvic nerves. This allows patients to be in and out on the same day and to recover more quickly.

Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see a medical students, residents, fellows or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
