Thyroid Cancer
The thyroid is a gland at the front of the neck and under the voice box. It produces important hormones that regulate the metabolism and other bodily functions. Thyroid cancer is a type of endocrine cancer that begins in the cells of the thyroid.
At Mount Sinai Hospital, we provide compassionate, patient-centered care for patients with thyroid cancer. This includes thyroid cancers that are at risk of spreading or that have already spread to other parts of the body.
Our experts also work on ground-breaking research that helps develop new tests and personalized treatments for thyroid and endocrine cancer.
What to expect
Each cancer is different and requires specialized treatment.
If you are referred to our cancer program, we may first send you for more tests to learn about your cancer.
You will then meet with a surgeon and/or an endocrinologist as part of your care. You may also see a radiation or medical oncologist. Your care team will work with you to develop a plan of care that is specific to your needs.
Care plans for thyroid cancer usually begin with surgery and may also include radioactive iodine, external beam radiation or systemic therapy.
Your care team can also help connect you to support services such as financial and spiritual supports as you navigate cancer treatment.
