Periodontics Clinic

We specialize in diagnosing and treating advanced gum disease.

What we do

Our periodontists specialize in treating issues related to inflamed and infected gums.

We aim to prevent tooth loss and improve overall oral health.

Gum disease is a serious dental condition in which the gums become swollen, inflamed and infected. If left untreated, this condition can cause damage to the gums, bones and tissues supporting the teeth, which may lead to tooth loss.

What to expect

Before your first appointment, we may ask you to complete a patient health questionnaire to help us understand your medical history and needs. Please bring your completed questionnaire with you to your first appointment.

At your first appointment, we will talk to you about your dental history, symptoms and concerns. Our periodontist may examine your gums, teeth and jaw. We may also take X-rays as part of your visit.

We will then work with you to decide on a care plan that is specific to your care needs. Your treatment plan may include any of the following:

  • Cleaning below the gum lines
  • Scaling and root planning (smoothing out the surface of the dental roots)
  • Flap surgery, in which sections of gum are peeled back for cleaning
  • Soft-tissue bone grafts, in which damaged tissue or bone is replaced with a small amount from your body or from a donor

If you have experienced tooth loss, we may refer you to our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic for a dental implant (tooth replacement surgery).

Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see medical students, residents or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated health-care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.

Please be aware that most dental treatments are not covered by OHIP and you will be required to pay for your dental care. See our dentistry fees for more information.

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health care coverage
  • Your hospital card
  • A list of your current medications
  • Your completed patient health questionnaire, if applicable
