Pregnancy Care

Our Family Health Team offers primary care and support throughout your pregnancy and labour.

What we do

Our Family Health Team provides regular prenatal appointments throughout your pregnancy.

We also offer group sessions that can help you prepare for birth and caring for a newborn. Visit our group perinatal care program page for more information.

You can find additional Ontario-focused information on pregnancy, birth and early parenting on the OMama website.

This program is only available to patients of physicians at our Toronto site.

What to expect

You will have several appointments with your primary care providers during your pregnancy. At these appointments, we will focus on monitoring your health and your baby's growth and development. For example, we will record your blood pressure, height and weight, and monitor the baby's heartbeat and movements. We will also recommend prenatal tests. You can learn more about these tests on our prenatal tests page

Your appointments are a good time to ask any questions you may have about medications, lifestyle changes and pregnancy symptoms.

You will receive care from both a staff physician and a resident physician. Residents are physicians who are completing two years of specialized training in family medicine under the supervision of experienced family physicians. You will have appointments with each of these physicians to give you the opportunity to get to know both physicians by the time your baby is due.

You will deliver your baby at Mount Sinai Hospital.  There is a large group of family physicians with a shared philosophy that work as a team to provide labour and delivery care at Mount Sinai. At the time of the birth, you will be cared for by both a resident and staff physician although they may not be the same physicians who cared for you during your pregnancy.

Some patients may experience complications during pregnancy or delivery that require a higher level of care. If this is the case, we work closely with obstetrical specialists at Mount Sinai to provide you with the appropriate level of care.

Our prenatal resource nurse and other team members are also available to you throughout your pregnancy.
