Healthy Living with Pain (HeLP)

We provide personalized support and treatment for people living with chronic pain.

What we do

The Healthy Living with Pain (HeLP) program provides safe and effective care for patients living with chronic, non-cancer pain.

In the past 10 years, Ontario has seen a rise in complications and overdoses linked to opioid medications. People are now more aware of the dangers of using these drugs in high amounts and for extended periods. We offer individuals dealing with chronic pain personalized support and treatments to handle their pain safely.

In 2016, the HeLP Program was awarded the Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario Bright Lights Award for innovative approaches to pain management. Accreditation Canada has recognized the HeLP Program as a “leading practice,” underscoring our commitment to setting standards and promoting excellence in chronic pain management.

This program is only available to patients of physicians at our Toronto site.

What to expect

The first step in pain management is a comprehensive pain assessment. This assessment helps our team understand the challenges you are facing and how we can best help you.

At your first appointment, a nurse practitioner will perform your assessment. A pharmacist may also be available to discuss your medication.

We will then work with you and your primary care providers to decide on a pain management plan that is specific to your needs.

In some cases, we may refer you to a specialized pain clinic.

What to bring

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health-care coverage
  • A list of your current medications
  • A list of your current physicians
  • A list of questions you want to ask
  • A support person, if desired

How to access our services

Speak with your physician or nurse practitioner at the Mount Sinai Academic Family Health Team to register for the program. A member of the team can refer you to the HeLP program if you have been experiencing chronic pain for more than three months or if you are using long-term opioid medications to manage your chronic pain.

Only registered patients can access this service. If you would like to become a patient of the Mount Sinai Academic Family Health Team, learn more on becoming a patient.
