IBD in Preconception and Pregnancy Clinic

We help patients manage their IBD leading up to and throughout pregnancy.

What we do

The IBD in Preconception and Pregnancy Clinic sees patients who have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and are considering a pregnancy or are currently pregnant.

We address questions and concerns about the impact of pregnancy on IBD and advise on treatment. Some common concerns include:

  • IBD and fertility
  • Medication safety in pregnancy
  • How to manage IBD during a pregnancy
  • Questions about childbirth

We are a consultation and research clinic affiliated with the Zane Cohen Centre for Digestive Diseases. This means we treat patients and, with their consent, we also learn from their experiences.

What to expect

You will continue to see your gastroenterologist and pregnancy care provider while you are a patient in our clinic.

During your first appointment at our clinic, we will ask about your medical history, the medications you currently take and any questions you have.

After this discussion, we will work with you to decide on a care plan that is specific to your needs. Your care plan may include:

  • Close monitoring and management of your IBD during the preconception, pregnancy and postpartum periods
  • Education about how IBD and medication affect fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Referrals to a high-risk obstetrician (OB) or maternal-fetal medicine specialist, if needed
  • Access to IBD resources, such as dietitians and patient support groups
  • Opportunities to participate in clinical research studies

What to bring

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health-care coverage
  • A list of current medication
  • A list of questions you want to ask
