Seeing a Gastroenterologist or Colorectal Surgeon

We diagnose and treat IBD and a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders.

What we do

Our experienced team of specialists works together to help patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and gastrointestinal disorders manage their condition and improve their quality of life.

In addition to caring for adult patients, we also specialize in providing unique care to adolescents as they transfer out of paediatric care programs.

What to expect

At your first appointment, your gastroenterologist or colorectal surgeon will ask about your medical history and symptoms. They will want to know:

  • When your symptoms began
  • How often your symptoms occur
  • The level of pain or discomfort you experience
  • Your past treatments and surgeries

It can help to write this information down before your first appointment.

After this discussion, we will work with you to decide on a care plan that is specific to your needs. We may recommend tests to help diagnose and monitor your condition. These tests can include:

Ongoing monitoring is an important part of IBD management.

We may also recommend any of the following treatments:

  • Medication
  • Diet and lifestyle changes
  • Surgery

If you and your health-care team think you might benefit from surgery, you will see a colorectal surgeon. Learn more about surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Some care plans require appointments with many health-care providers, such as physicians, oncologists, colorectal surgeons, dietitians, nurses, social workers and pharmacists. They all work together to provide comprehensive care. As we are a teaching hospital, you may also see medical students, residents or fellows as part of your care.
