Inpatient Psychiatry Unit

We provide inpatient psychiatric care for individuals who require hospitalization to stabilize and treat mental health concerns.

What we do

Our Inpatient Psychiatry Unit provides short-term treatment for adults over the age of 18 who need acute care interventions in the hospital because of mental illness.

We provide assessment, treatment and discharge planning in a safe and therapeutic environment.

What to expect

You will meet with an interprofessional health care team, including nurses, physicians, social workers, occupational therapists and pharmacists. They will ask you about your current and past symptoms and the factors and experiences that contributed to them.

As needed, and at your request, they will also meet with you and family or friends to learn more about you. Together, the team will work with you to help develop a care plan specific to your needs.

Your care plan will be tailored to your individual needs and may include any of the following:

  • Psychiatric, psycho-social and functional assessment
  • Individual and/or group therapy
  • Medication management
  • Recommendations for educational tools and self-help resources for your illness

A comprehensive discharge plan is important to help you stay well after you are discharged. We will start planning for your discharge shortly after you arrive on the unit to make sure your care needs are addressed when you leave the hospital. We will work with you and your health-care providers to develop a plan and transfer of care when you are ready to leave the hospital.

Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see medical students, residents or other medical trainees as part of your care team. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated health-care team  who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.

Personal items

When you arrive, our health-care team will check your belongings and store items that may be a safety threat to patients, visitors or staff in a personalized cubby in the nursing station. These items will be returned to you when you leave the hospital.

We encourage you to send valuables home with friends or family, if possible.

Visitors

Please review visitor information before coming to the hospital.

We ask that all visitors check in at the nursing station and ensure that all items or gifts are checked by the clinical team.

What to bring

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health-care coverage
  • A list of your current medications, both prescription and non-prescription (e.g., vitamins and supplements), labelled and in their original containers.

How to access our services

Admissions to the inpatient unit are through the Emergency Department. Inpatient services are for patients needing immediate and intensive mental health support because they are suffering from serious mental illness or experiencing a crisis.
