Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

We provide family-centred care for newborn babies who need specialized attention.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mount Sinai Hospital is dedicated to providing specialized care for babies born prematurely or requiring intensive care.

Our level 3 NICU specializes in state-of-the-art medical and technical care for extremely premature and low birth-weight infants.

As a regional referral centre for high-risk pregnancies, we admit approximately 1,100 babies to our NICU each year. Mount Sinai is also physically connected to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the regional delivery centre for all infants who need surgical and cardiac care.

Mount Sinai established the Family Integrated Care (FICare) program, which has been adopted in NICUs around the world. FICare empowers caregivers to actively participate in the care of their preterm infants in the NICU. This provides significant benefits for the well-being of both infants and their families. In our NICU, parents are members of the care team.

Fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, our NICU plays an important role in neonatology fellowships, contributing to the education of the next generation of specialists.

As members of both the Canadian Neonatal Network and Evidence-Based Practice for Quality Improvement (EPIQ), we continue to advance our knowledge and skills in order to care for premature and sick newborns.
