Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics

We support people whose pregnancy might be affected by a genetic condition.

What we do

The Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics team provides genetic counselling and support to patients whose current or future pregnancies are at risk for a genetic disorder.

Our team includes medical geneticists, genetic counsellors, genetic counselling assistants and clerks.

We see patients who have a personal or family history of a genetic disorder. We also see those who have had an abnormal screening test or ultrasound in pregnancy which may increase the risk for a genetic condition.

What to expect

You will continue to receive pregnancy care from your current obstetrician, midwife or family care provider while you are a patient at our clinic.

Our goal is to provide accurate and up-to-date information about test results, ultrasound findings and genetic conditions.

You will meet with a genetic counsellor and medical geneticist who will review your medical, pregnancy and family histories. We will also review any important screening tests or ultrasounds you may have completed.

We will talk with you about your options for prenatal screening or diagnostic testing. We can also make referrals to other specialists who may be helpful in your care.

It is important to us that you participate in decision-making about your care. We will help you understand your testing options so that you can make the best possible decisions for yourself and your family.

Please note that we are a teaching hospital, so you may see genetic counselling students, residents or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.

What to bring

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health-care coverage
  • Questions you want to ask
  • A support person, if desired
  • Any relevant documentation (such as pregnancy test results, ultrasounds, genetic testing reports or family medical records)

Please note that you will likely be asked about your family history. It can be helpful to review your family history, as well as your partner’s, before the appointment.
