TORONTO (November 20, 2024) Sinai Health is proud to announce the completion of the newly redeveloped Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital.

With a focus on patient flow and communication, state-of-the-art technology and infection control, Mount Sinai is reshaping the delivery of emergency care through innovative design, improved patient care and specialized services.

“The expansion and redesign of our Emergency Department (ED) will significantly enhance our ability to deliver safe, high-quality, and exceptional emergency care to the critically ill or injured patients we serve,” said Dr. Gary Newton, President and CEO, Sinai Health. “This transformative project showcases our commitment to innovation while meeting the growing needs of our community.”

The Emergency Department has undergone a massive transformation since the start of this multi-year project, increasing its footprint to a modernized 24,000-square-foot facility—more than double its previous size. This expansion will allow Mount Sinai Hospital to accommodate up to 80,000 emergency patient visits per year, a substantial increase from its original capacity designed to serve 35,000 patients annually.

This redevelopment project includes a host of advanced features that will improve patient care:

  • Medical procedure rooms with ceiling-suspended booms to maximize space, enable safer work environments and provide enhanced patient care
  • Medical Imaging co-located in the ED
  • Assessment rooms for medical and surgical specialties
  • Airborne-isolation rooms, and a negative-pressure zone for infection control
  • Dedicated EMS entrance for streamlined patient arrivals and faster emergency response
  • Private rooms to enhance patient privacy, safety and care

“We are proud to have a space that was thoughtfully designed with the future in mind,” said Dr. David Dushenski, Chief of Emergency Medicine, Sinai Health. “We’ve been able to consider the patient experience, staff work flows and efficiency, and newer infection control practices in order to re-imagine the way we deliver emergency care. This enables us to better serve our most vulnerable patients, such as older adults, those requiring mental health and addiction support, and obstetric and gynaecologic patients.”

The centre is named in recognition of Gerald Schwartz and Heather Reisman, whose transformative $15 million gift made possible the significant physical expansion of the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre.

The expansion of the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre is part of Renew Sinai, the largest and most ambitious redevelopment project in Mount Sinai’s history. In total, more than 300,000 square feet is redeveloped to improve care for patients with cancer, undergoing life-saving surgery and requiring emergency care.
