Dr. Amna F. Husain

Palliative Care

Dr. Amna Husain is the Research Leader, Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, Mount Sinai Hospital, and an Associate Professor, Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto.

Dr. Husain holds an MPH from the School of Public Health, Harvard University and an MD from the University of Alberta.

Her research interests include models of collaborative care for patients with complex needs, ehealth tools for collaboration, continuity of care, health service delivery, palliative care, quality improvement, quality of life/satisfaction/patient experience in cancer care and chronic disease care. She uses mixed methods research, survey and quantitative methods.

Dr. Husain is co-principal investigator on a CCSRI-funded project to jointly examine the implementation and clinical effectiveness of interventions to build better functioning teams of care. She has previously led a pilot randomized control trial of an online communication tool for collaborative care in complex patients. She has also led projects developing new models of collaboration in the care of heart failure and young adults with cancer.

Her previous roles include being Co-Chair of the Indicators of Quality Palliative Care Committee, Cancer Care Ontario and Co-Chair of Measurement and Evaluation Committee, Toronto Central Palliative Care Network. She has published nearly 40 peer-reviewed research publications.

Major research activities

Dr. Husain’s current research focuses on new models of collaborative care for patients with complex needs and the tools that enable collaboration. The objective of the research program is to answer the question what conditions are needed for loosely affiliated networks to function as effective teams, explore the metrics of team effectiveness, and the impact on patient experience of care.
