Dr. May Abdul Ghani Mouhi Al Deen Sheikh Alarab

Areas of Focus
Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Dr. Alarab is an urogynecologist at Mount Sinai Hospital and expert in the biology of pelvic organ prolapse.

She obtained her medical degree and postgraduate training at Baghdad University and undertook additional training in Ireland. She then undertook a clinical and research fellowship in urogynaecology at the University of Toronto. She also holds an MSc from the University of Toronto.

Dr. Alarab’s research program within the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery was the first in Canada to focus on the extra cellular matrix (ECM) of vaginal tissue of women with pelvic organ prolapse and to study the molecular biology of this debilitating disease at the gene and protein expression level.

Her work has added to our understanding of the mechanisms of pelvic prolapse in women, and of the influence of ovarian hormones on the ECM of the pelvic floor. She has examined the changes in smooth muscle machinery proteins in prolapse, as well as the roles of bone morphogenetic proteins and the lysyl oxidase enzyme family.

Dr. Alarab has published more than 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
