We provide urgent care in our after-hours clinic.

What we do

Our After-Hours Urgent Care Clinic provides services for patients registered with the Mount Sinai Academic Family Health Team.

Note: This information applies to patients of physicians at our Toronto site only.

If you need medical advice when our office is closed, call Health811 by dialing 811 or 1-866-797-0007.

This service is available Monday to Friday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday and holidays, this service is available 24 hours.  

You can also chat online with a registered nurse.

How to access our services

You can book an appointment online for an urgent care appointment in our after-hours clinic.  To access the After-Hours Urgent Care Clinic, you must be a registered patient with the Mount Sinai Academic Family Health Team.

Please note that you can only be seen at the site at which you are a patient. For example, if you are a patient at our Toronto site, you can only be seen at the Toronto clinic.

The After-Hours Urgent Care Clinic is only for new and urgent concerns. Please be aware that certain issues, such as prescriptions renewals, form completions or reviewing test results are not appropriate for the After-Hours Urgent Care Clinic.

During evenings and weekends, we do not have access to X-ray, electrocardiogram (ECG) or blood tests. If you require urgent imaging or blood tests, we will direct you to the Emergency Department.

When to come to the After-Hours Urgent Care Clinic

Some reasons to come to our after-hours clinic include: 

  • A child between three and six months old has a fever
  • A fever has lasted for more than 72 hours in children or adults
  • A bad cough or trouble breathing, especially if your asthma is getting worse despite using puffers (inhalers)
  • An earache has lasted more than two to three days
  • A child will not stop crying and is very irritable
  • A young child is not drinking enough fluids and has a dry mouth, no tears and fewer than three wet diapers in 24 hours
  • A baby less than three months old is vomiting or has diarrhea
  • Blood in diarrhea
  • A new kind of acute pain
  • A new rash with blisters
  • You are having a hard time with your thoughts and feelings (mental health crisis)

When to go to an emergency department

Go directly to your nearest emergency department if: 

  • A baby younger than three months old has any fever
  • A child or adult with a weakened immune system has a fever
  • A child is very sleepy or hard to wake up
  • If you have trouble breathing, including working harder to breathe or breathing faster than normal, especially if you have asthma or wheezing that does not get better with puffers (inhalers). Look out for blue lips or chest pain.
  • You cannot keep fluids or food down because of vomiting for more than eight hours
  • New chest pain, shortness of breath or a lower level of consciousness
  • New neurological symptoms like weakness, a severe headache or trouble forming words
  • You think you have a broken bone
  • New severe pain, such as intense abdominal pain

If you are less than 20 weeks pregnant

If you have an urgent question after-hours, call TeleHealth at 811 to speak with a registered nurse. If needed, they can put you in touch with the Family Health Team physician on call.

If you are more than 20 weeks pregnant

If you have an urgent question or are unsure whether you are in labour, please call the Mount Sinai Hospital Switchboard at 416-586-4200 and ask to speak to the Family Medicine obstetrics resident on-call.  You can also call the Labour and Delivery Triage department at 416-586-4800 ext. 3210 to speak with a nurse.

What to bring

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health-care coverage
  • A list of your current medications  
  • A list of questions you want to ask  
  • A support person, if desired
