High-Risk Pregnancy Care
We provide specialized care for patients with high-risk pregnancies.
A high-risk pregnancy has a higher chance of complications for either you or your baby. There are several risk factors that can make a pregnancy high-risk for any given individual.
What to expect
If your health-care provider says your pregnancy is high-risk, you may be referred to a specialist called a maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialist, also known as a high-risk obstetrician (OB), for your pregnancy care. These specialists work closely with other specialists to manage your and your baby’s health during pregnancy and birth.
With a high-risk pregnancy, you can expect more appointments and tests than you would with a low-risk pregnancy. In an effort to reduce the number of visits to Mount Sinai Hospital, you may see multiple care providers during your clinic appointments. As a result, the entire clinic day may last several hours. Please bring any personal items you may need, such as medication, snacks or a glucose meter.
At Mount Sinai, we specialize in providing high-risk pregnancy care for patients from across the region.
Our high-risk pregnancy services include:
- The Ontario Fetal Centre, which provides advanced care for high-risk pregnancies with fetal complications
- The Medical Disorders of Pregnancy program, which provides specialized pregnancy care for pregnant patients with underlying medical conditions
- The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which provides neonatology consultations before birth and specialized care to babies after birth
If your baby is likely to need care in our NICU, members from the NICU team will meet with you to discuss what to expect.
Some patients may have a low-risk pregnancy at first and then develop conditions during their pregnancy that increase their risk of complications. If your pregnancy becomes high-risk, your existing OB can often continue your care together with an MFM specialist.
