After giving birth, you will be transferred to a postpartum room with your baby unless your baby is admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

It is common to stay in our postpartum rooms for about 26 hours after a vaginal birth and between 36 and 48 hours after a Caesarean birth. Your partner or support person can always stay with you.

Visiting hours for friends and family are from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Please note that our postpartum unit is also locked keep babies and families safe. Visitors need to use the telephone by the entrance to be buzzed into and out of the area.

Partners or support people are given identification bracelets, and babies wear security badges attached to their ankles, which will sound an alarm if they are taken out of our unit.

All patient rooms include the following:

  • Storage space for your belongings
  • An adjustable bed
  • A bedside table
  • Privacy curtains
  • A cot for your baby with storage space
  • A lounge chair
  • A TV and phone (paid for separately)

  • A bathroom with shower

If your support person is staying overnight, there is a separate bathroom with a shower available.

If you are not in a private room, we suggest using the family lounge when visitors arrive. In the family lounge, there is a kitchenette with a microwave, kettle and fridge for your use. Please remember to label any food you store.

Room charges

Room charges

All birthing rooms in Labour and Delivery are private and the cost is covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for Ontario residents with active coverage.

In the Mother-Baby Unit where you go after the birth, OHIP covers ward rooms with four people per room. If you prefer a semi-private or private room, you can request one when you register at Labour and Delivery.

We will do our best to accommodate your request if those rooms are available. Please note that a fee applies to all semi-private and private rooms on the postpartum floor.

Many insurance plans (benefits) will cover part or all of the cost of a semi-private or private room.

We support direct billing, but you will need to present a credit card upon registration in Labour and Delivery. Your credit card will be charged if private coverage is not available. Uninsured and international patients must provide a credit card at registration for all services that may have fees.
