Medical Disorders of Pregnancy

We specialize in high-risk pregnancy care for patients with pregnancy-related or pre-existing medical conditions.

A pregnancy may be considered high-risk for many different reasons. The risk might be related to the health of the parent, the baby or both.

The Medical Disorders of Pregnancy (MDP) program provides specialized high-risk pregnancy care for patients with pregnancy-related or pre-existing medical conditions.

Our areas of care include cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, hematology, infectious disease, gastroenterology, oncology, hepatology, nephrology, mental health and addiction, metabolic disease and obesity medicine.

Pregnancy care is provided by maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists, also known as high-risk obstetricians. Our MFMs work closely with medical specialists and other health-care professionals to provide comprehensive care.

If there is a specific concern with your baby, the MDP team will work with our colleagues at the Ontario Fetal Centre. Together, we can help you understand your baby's condition and work with you to develop a care plan for your pregnancy and birth.

If a genetic condition might affect your baby, we will refer you for prenatal genetic counselling.

Our MFM specialists also work with the Obstetric Anesthesia team to provide safe and effective pain management during labour, birth and postpartum.

Sinai Health is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto (U of T). As such, education and knowledge translation are important parts of our program. Our MDP team helps train a wide range of medical learners through U of T training programs, electives and continuing education.

Our MFM specialists are also engaged in research and scholarly programs. We aim to advance the understanding of medical diagnoses specific to pregnancy. Our collective goal is to improve patient care, experience and outcomes.
